According to official news released on Wednesday (April 29), this year’s two sessions, China’s most important annual political event, will be held in Beijing in late May.
The report said that the third plenary session of the 13th National People’s Congress, China’s highest legislative body, will be held on May 22, while the third plenary session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, China’s highest political advisory body, will be held on May 21.
The “two sessions” refer to the annual plenary session of NPC（the National People’s Congress, usually begins on March 5. The annual plenary session of the CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) National Committee, which should be open on March 3.
Both sessions this year have been postponed for two months because China needs to concentrate on fighting the novel coronavirus epidemic.
Experts said that China’s national “two sessions” are a major event on the political agenda and will form guidance strategies for the year. The convening of the “two sessions” in late May is reasonable because China has controlled the COVID-19 epidemic.
On Tuesday(April 27th), Xu Hongcai, an economist at the China International Economic Exchange Center, also pointed out the two sessions across the country will begin in May due to China’s decisive victory in containing novel coronavirus.
During the NPC and CPPCC sessions, about 3,000 national legislators and 2,150 national political advisers go to Beijing to review the work reports of the central government, the highest judicial organ, and the annual budget and bring the voices of grassroots and different social sectors to the central leadership.
As the reopening of schools, the commencement of two sessions is also a manifestation of controlling the epidemic, but more importantly, as a critical step, to review the government’s work of the previous year and listen to the government’s plans for this year, especially when the epidemic spreads to the whole world.
